Project description

The purpose of the project is to develop methods and models based on Physics of Failure to enhance the development of reliable products. The project has two distinct directions where it can either take more Mechanical or Electrical Engineering approach. 

Thesis case number 1:

The model should include realistic life time estimation and analysis based on the most recent research results as well as simulation tools. You will need to build acceleration models for vibration and shock induced failure states in power electronics. Existing models need to be investigated and further developed in order to model actual failure mechanisms in the most efficient way. The model(s) is sought implemented in the AAU Matlab simulation tool for life time prediction and verified on an actual case from the industry.

The model should include realistic life time estimation and analysis based on the most recent research results as well as simulation tools. You will need to build acceleration models for humidity or electrical transients induced failure mechanisms in film capacitors. Existing models need to be investigated and further developed in order to model actual failure mechanisms in the most efficient way. The model(s) is sought implemented in the AAU Matlab simulation tool for life time prediction and verified on an actual case from the industry.

As a part of your Master Thesis we would expect you to:

  • Literature search on acceleration models with relevance for the case
  • Understand the AAU Matlab simulation tool
  • Develop a model for realistic life time estimation
  • Verify model on actual case
  • Document the results and present them at AAU or DTU

DELTA will provide you with a workspace and will compensate for travel expenses as needed.

Student description

For this project you should have an engineering background with specialisation in either electronics applied mechanics material sciences (metallurgy) or similar. Strong analytical skills and mathematical understanding will be required for the best results for this case.

Experience with (AAU) MatLab is highly preferable though other similar simulation tools (Maple Mathematica MathCad) may be just as relevant.
